Er:LiNbO3 (LN) has been established as one of the well-known fotonics materials for using in NIR spectral region. Amongst the methods for localized doping of erbium into the LN, ion implantation is one of the promising procedures. We have focused on the importance of crystallographic orientation of the LN substrate cuts on the lasing performance of the Er implanted LN. For that not only commonly known X- and Z-cuts, but also intentionally designed Y-cuts, that were perpendicular and parallel to the cleavage plane, were used for the middle energy ion implantation using different fluences of Er+. In the implanted samples erbium concentration-depth profiles were measured and special attention was paid to the emission spectra in the NIR region in both, implanted and post-implantation annealed (350 and 600 °C) samples.
