Článek diskutuje pohledy na pravost textu Výtah z nedávno vydané knihy Pojednání o lidské přirozenosti, v němž je shrnut hlavní argument Humova Pojednání o lidské přirozenosti. Původní tvrzení o tom, že autorem Výtahu je Adam Smith se ve světle historické evidence a věcného a stylistického rozboru textu jeví jako neudržitelné. Skutečným autorem se zdá být sám David Hume. V druhé části podává text analýzu základní Humovy argumentace ve Výtahu a přiklání se k názoru, že jde o první Humovu kritickou sebereflexi jeho opus magnum a že Hume v něm podává revizi svého centrálního filosofického pojmu, kterým je pojem belief.

The article discusses views on the authorship of An Abstract of a Book lately Published as a Treatise of Human Nature. The original thesis, which states that the writer was Adam Smith is not tenable. This result is proved by the historical and stylistic evidence as well as by the analysis of the content of the text. The real writer seems to be David Hume himself. Then the article describes the Hume's argumentation in the Abstract and argues that the Abstract can be understood as Hume's first self-critique of his opus magnum.
