A tapered microstructured optical fiber with steering-wheel structure has been designed and prepared with the aim of increasing the overlap of an evanescent wave with cladding holes. The outer diameter of this steering–wheel fiber was of 125 um and core diameter was of 5 um. It was experimentally proved that the cladding holes in the waist part of the tapered fiber remained sufficiently large for passing methane and that the core diameter of the untapered pigtails was large enough for coupling light into the sensor fiber.
