Superparamagnetic nanoparticles (~ 10 nm) were developed based on iron oxides. Their surface was modified with mono-, di- or polysaccharides, amino acids or poly(amino acid)s or synthetic polymers based on (meth)acrylic acid and their derivatives. Nanoparticles are suitable for diagnostic and therapeutical applications including labeling of living cells. The invention provides a tool for monitoring the history and fate of cells transplanted into organism including their in vivo migration.
