The chapter analyzes the main arguments and motivations for obtaining a noble title in the 19th century Bohemia. By exploring the strategies used by the applicants as well as its acceptance by the state it comes to conclusion that the social practices of patronage, sponsorship and civil society gained more and more ground during the 19th century and subsequently became one of the major components in the catalogue of stately supported and remunerated behaviour.
