Trapping of a vacancy at a nitrogen impurity in diamond leads to the formation of a luminescent defect, called the NV colour centre, being either neutral (NV0) or negatively charged (NV-). Both of these centres are photostable and can be detected in individual 10-100 nm sized particles, which allows application of nanodiamonds for intracellular imaging. However the charge transfer between the NVo and NV- causes luminescence shifts [1]. In our previous work we have studied such shifts by measuring PL response of oxidised and hydrogen terminated diamond nanoparticles and established differences in relative weight of NVo and NV- luminescence upon the surface functionalisation changes.
