Slender webs used in steel and steel-concrete construction are liable to buckle, but fortunately their performance and limit states are very favourably affected by post-buckled behaviour. However, in the case of bridge girders and crane-supporting girders subjected to many times repeated loading, the webs exhibit many times repeated buckling, so-called “breathing”. The authors have been studying this phenomenon for several years now, and in so doing have to date carried out more than 200 tests. Based on an analysis of the results obtained, simple user-friendly formulae are established such as to make it possible completely to disregard the parasitic effect of the cumulative damage process generated by web breathing.
