Úvodní kapitola ke knize nastiňuje všechny významné aspekty současné standardní čínštiny užívané v ČLR (tzv. putonghua). Vysvětluje, co se rozumí pod pojmem „čínština“, jak vznikl dnešní jazykový standard, zabývá se problémem přepisu čínštiny do latinky a čínskou transkripční abecedou piynin. Zájemcům o jazyk je nastíněna míra komplikovanosti studia čínštiny v porovnání s jazyky jinými. Úvod dále shrnuje, co bude obsahem dalších částí knihy: představení čínského znakového písma, historického vývoje jazyka a jeho moderních dialektů, jeho gramatiky, výslovnosti, slovní zásoby (publikace nemá charakter jazykové učebnice, dává celkovou představu o čínštině; přílohy obsahují rejstřík, mapu Číny, seznam literatury a periodizaci dějin Číny).

The Introductory Chapter outlines all major aspects of modern standard Mandarin (putonghua), such as: what is understood by the term „the Chinese language“, emergence of the modern language standard, the problems of romanization and the Chinese romanization alphabet – pinyin. For prospective students the level of difficulty of Mandarin is outlined in comparison with other languages. The Introductory Chapter sums up the content of the further chapters: the Chinese character script, historical development of the Chinese language and its modern dialects, its grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary (the publication does not have the character of a textbook – it introduces the Chinese language as such; the appendices comprise of the index, the map of P.R.C., list of literature, and the periodization of the Chinese history).
