Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-induced gonadotropin secretion in pituitary cells from neonatal animals is inhibited by melatonin, because these cells express functional MT1 subtype of melatonin receptors that are coupled to pertussis toxin-sensitive G proteins. Their activation oby melatonin leads also to a decrease in cAMP level, intracellular calcium and attenuated activity of protein kinase A
