Enzymatic transglycosylation catalysed by glycosidases is a respected method in carbohydrate synthesis. The spectrum of acceptors is practically infinite, contrary to glycosyl donors, usually nitrophenyl glycosides. We have developed glycosyl azides as novel, efficient and easily prepared glycosyl donors for glycosidases. Their high water solubility facilitates the synthesis of disaccharides by transglycosylations with comparable or better yields than using traditional O-glycosides. Using the azide moiety, such products can simply be conjugated to complex structures after reduction of the azide to an amine
