Monografie v deseti odborných kapitolách zpřístupňuje informace o domácích a zahraničních výsledcích výzkumu v genetice a šlechtění sladkovodních hospodářských druhů ryb s důrazem na druhy typické pro akvakulturu středoevropského regionu. Základy genetiky v ochraně biodiverzity vysvětlují obecné pojmy, zásady a metody genetické ochrany druhů, populací a plemen ryb, záchranné chovy ohrožených druhů a ochranu genetických zdrojů hospodářsky významných druhů ryb.
