Epidermal crests are among morphologic traits distinguishing species of the Gobio and Romanogobio genera. The crests are half-round shaped on the cut, their thickness being comparable to thickness of the epidermis. The crests consist of several layers of live epithelial cells, secretory cells do not occur here. Breeding tubercles, occurring particularly in fish of the genus Gobio during spawning period, differ from the crests both in shape (conical) and in cell structure (epithelial cells transformed into keratinized layers).

Epidermální crests patří mezi morfologické znaky rozlišující druhy rodů Gobio a Romanogobio. Crests jsou na řezu půlkruhového tvaru, jejich tloušťka je srovnatelná s tloušťkou epidermis. Crests jsou tvořeny několika vrstvami živých epiteliálních buněk, sekretorické buňky se zde nevyskytují. Breeding tubercles, které se vyskytují zejména u ryb rodu Gobio v období tření, se od crests liší jak tvarem (kónický) tak buněčnou strukturou (epiteliální buňky transformované do keratinizovaných vrstev.
