Tato studie sleduje původ dichotomického nadačního konceptu rozlišujícího mezi waqfem ahlí (rodinná nadace) a waqfem chajrí (dobročinná nadace), jehož použití se v kontextu předmoderních společností zdá být nevhodné. Stále je však mnohými badateli uplatňován. Na příkladu Egypta v prvních třech dekádách 20. století jsou vysvětleny procesy, skrz které došlo k redefinici významů waqfu a jejich zanesení do nejrůznějších žurnalistických a právních textů, z nichž si přirozeně našly cestu do moderní vědecké produkce a takto ovlivnily naše chápání jeho předmoderních projevů.

This article inquires into origins of a dichotomic waqf concept distinguishing between waqf khayrī (charitable endowment) and waqf ahlī (family endowment, which seems to be insufficient in the context of pre-modern Islamic societies, but still frequently invoked by many scholars. Using the example of Egypt in the first three decades of the 20th century, it explains the processes through which a redefinition of waqf´s significance was implemented and fixed in different journalistic and juridical texts. New definitions of waqf thus found their way into modern scholarship and have affected our comprehension of waqf´s pre-modern manifestations.
