The modulation of native and recombinant NMDA receptors function by pregnenolone sulfate (PS) was studied by patch-clamp measurements. The rate of the diminution of NMDA receptors potentiation by PS in isolated membrane patches was influenced by inhibitors of protein phosphatases and kinases. The results suggest that the PS-potentiating effect at NMDA receptors is connected to the cellular phosphorylation/dephosphorylation pathways
