The formation of the sperm oviductal reservoir mediated by saccharide structures has been described. However, the mechanism of sperm release from this reservoir is still unclear. At the current state of knowledge four hypotheses are being discussed: - saccharide epitopes change triggered by hormones - sperm leaving the reservoir after their capacitation and hyperactivation - sperm undergoing capacitation due to unknown signal from incoming egg - sperm preparing for capacitation hidden and protected in reservoir, which establish friendly environment, passively released by destabilisation of sperm-oviduct bond (by inhibition or by enzyme activity), and finalizing capacitation under pressure of environment change Studies performed in our lab showed that the follicle rupture could influence: - amount of saccharides in oviduct from egg envelopes - the activity of several glycosidases in the oviduct - production of some substances affecting the strength of sperm-oviduct binding.
