Saccharomyces cerevisiae colony transition between major developmental phases is accompanied by striking transcription changes; the development within particular phase is guided mostly at the post-transcriptional level. Cells located at the colony margin export higher amounts of ammonium than central cells and activate an adaptive metabolism. Central chronologically aged cells are unable to undergo these changes but they maintain higher levels of various stress-defence enzymes. These divergent properties of both cell types determine their consequent dissimilar fate
Přechod mezi jednotlivými vývojovými fázemi kolonií Saccharomyces cerevisiae je spojen s výraznými změnami transkripce; vývoj uvnitř fází je regulován především na posttranskripční úrovni. Buňky rostoucí na okraji kolonie exportují více amonných iontů než buňky v jejím centru a aktivují adaptační metabolismus. Centrální chronologicky starší buňky nejsou schopny této aktivace, ale naopak udržují vysokou hladinu enzymů ochrany proti stresu. Rozdílné vlastnosti obou buněčných typů určují jejich rozdílný osud
