Obsahovým námětem semináře bylo hodnocení malířských děl, a to hlediskem výtvarným (z pohledu uměleckých oborů), umělecko-historickým (z pohledu humanitních věd) a materiálovým (z pohledu přírodních věd). Cílem bylo ocenit informace, které, zdánlivě jako vedlejší produkt, vznikají zpravidla při restaurátorském a materiálovém průzkumu a jsou a měly by být dále prohlubovány výzkumem systematickým a komparativním, jehož výsledkem má být zařazení výtvarného díla do kulturních a historických souvislostí (dle výsledků bádání vědeckého) a také (a především) pochopení jeho uměleckého sdělení v kontextu naší vlastní výtvarné tradice (dle výsledků bádání uměleckého).

Subject of the seminar contributions was the understanding a painting by looking at it from three points of view: the creative (from the viewpoint of the arts), the art-historical (from the viewpoint of the humanities) and the material (from the scientific viewpoint). The aim was to appreciate the information, which, seemingly as a side-product, usually emerges during the restoration and material investigation and which is and should be further intensified by systematic and comparative research, the result of which should be the classification of the work of art in cultural and historical contexts (according to the results of scientific research) and also (and especially) the understanding of its artistic message in the context of our own artistic tradition (according to the results of artistic research).
