The second edition contains an extended overview on the history of electrostatic optics and of the optical properties of electrostatic lenses, their optical behavior and its computation. Further the questions of practical design of lenses are discussed, including the problems of electrode and insulator material selection and processing. Finally applications of electrostatic lenses in electron microscopes are given.
