The pupating and diapausing larvae contain similar titers of juvenile hormone esterase (JHE) activity. The activity is minimal at molts and there is some evidence that it is a direct response to ecdysteroids. Synthetic JHE inhibitor suppressed 98% of the activity without any effect on pupation. The results indicate that JHE is not crucial for the switch between larval development, diapause, and metamorphosis.
