There seems to be no problem with an informal delimitation of the set of standard natural numbers: it is the set that contains zero, contains a successor of every number it contains, and it contains nothing else. When we try to transform this intuitive delimitation into a set of axioms of the standard logical kind, it turns out that it is the last clause that is the principal stumbling block. This paper investigates why this is so and concludes that, in a sense, the problematic clause amounts to second-order induction. The considerations then serve as a basis for drawing some general conclusions concerning the general question of logical formalization of intuitive notions.

Neformální vymezení množiny standardních přirozených čísel se nezdá být nijak problematické: je to množina, která obsahuje nulu, obsahuje následníka každého čísla, které obsahuje, a neobsahuje nic jiného. Když se toto intuitivní vymezení pokusíme transformovat do sady axiomů standardního logického druhu, ukáže se, že je to ta poslední klauze, která je zásadní překážkou. Tento článek zkoumá, proč je tomu tak a dospívá k závěru, že ona problematická klauze nám v jistém smyslu dává druhořádovou indukci. Tyto úvahy pak slouží jako východisko vyvození obecných závěrů týkajících se obecné otázky logické formalizace intuitivních pojmů.
