Přístupy historiků umění a restaurátorů k uměleckému dílu se podstatným způsobem odlišují: historikové umění se věnují především konceptuálnímu obsahu obrazu, zatímco restaurátoři se zaměřují především na materiální stránku uměleckého díla. Smysluplné restaurování uměleckých děl by mělo být výsledkem kreativního dialogu mezi oběma profesemi.

Approaches of art historians and restorers to the art work differ remarkably: the art historians deal especially with the conceptual content of the image, while the restorers focus of the material character of the art work. The meaningful restoration of art works should result from the creative dialogue of both professions.
