The paper deals with special optical fibers for fiber-optic chemical detection. The results on the fabrication of optical fibers with cores composed of highly doped silica including fibers with inverted-graded /IGI/ refractive-index profiles tailored for enhancing the sensitivity are presented. Sensitivity of such fibers to refractive-index changes in the region of 1.46-1.49 has been achieved and discussed.
