Commercially available and laboratory prepared samples of polysiloxane polymers were used for the preparation of hydrophobic detection layers on polymer clad silica fibers. The sensitivity of the layers to toluene dissolved in water was tested by bringing them into contact with toluene solutions and measuring the output power from the fiber excited by an inclined collimated beam. A detection limit of about 10 mg/l of toluene in water was determined.
