The papers deals with the sol-gel preparation of preforms of silica optical fibers doped in the core with Al2O3, P2O5 and ytterbium and erbium ions. Experimental details are discussed and similarity of this technique to the MCVD method is shown. Effects of the substrate/deposit interaction during the fabrication on the refractive-index profiles and fiber attenuation are derived from experimental results. The comparison of erbium-doped sol-gel fibers with those Yb/Er-doped prepared by MCVD is presented.
