The paper deals with the detection of aromatic hydrocarbons in air or water which is based on refractive-index changes of detection a xerogel layer coused by its interaction with hydrocarbons. The laeyrs were applied on silica optical fibers excited by an inclined collimated beam. Sensitivity of the tetraethoxysilane- and methyltriethoxysilane- based xerogel layers to benzene and toluene are presented in the paper. The detection limits are about 1000 and 5 ppm for air and water, respectively.
