The lecture deals with several approaches for optical detection of hydrocarbons dissolved in water by using sensors based in silica optical fibers. Environmental and health effects of hydrocarbons dissolved in water are discussed. Details on fiber-optic sensors based on midinfrared or UV spectral measurements or refractive-index detection are shown. Principles of polymeric sensing membranes applied on the sensing fibers are discussed and examples of frequently used membranes are given in the lecture.
