This paper decribes the sol-gel fabrication of silica optical fibers doped in the core with erbium and ytterbium ions, and bismuth oxide increasing the third-order optical susceptibility. The cores were prepared via repeated application of gel layers into silica substrate tubes combined with heat treatment at temperatures from 1000 to 2000 .sup.o.sup.C. Fibers with concentration of bishmuth oxide ranging from 4 to 8
