    We report a sensor based on spectral interrogation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in an integrated optical waveguide-coupled surface plasmon resonance sensing device. We present theoretical analysis of the sensor structure, we demonstrate that the laboratory prototype of the sensor is capable of measuring refractive index changes smaller than 1.2x10.sup.-6.sup.. In conjuction with a-hCG the sensor is capable of detecting 2 ng/ml hCG present in 1.sup.o.sup./o bovine serum albumin solution.
