Effects of water and isopropanol vapours on the refractive index of polysiloxane xerogel thin layers with different polarity are investigated by means of optical fibers coated with these layers. It is shown that xerogel layers exhibit hight scattering optical losses and that the polarity of layers doped with methyl groups is substantially lower than that of pure polysiloxane layers. The Langmuir adsorption isotherms for water and isopropanol vapours were determined from the experiment.
