RT-PCR for tyrosine, a key enzyme of melanin biosynthesis, was utilised to analyse the peripheral blood of miniature pigs with malignant melanoma for the presence of tumour cells. Tyrosinase mRNA was detected in 62% of melanoma-bearing animals. It shows that tumour dissemination in advanced porcine melanoma can be ascertained by this way similarly as in human patients.
