The main objective of the paper is to study the effects of shear deformation in the plated elements of bridge structures upon the deflections of the whole system. Contrary to analytical models currently used in bridge design, which, when calculating bridge deflections, consider only bending effects,it is found out in the study that, in a wide range of bridge geometries, the effect of shear cannot be disregarded and needs to be taken into account in design.
