Oxidation of carbon/carbon composites impregnated with silica and silicon oxycarbide was studied at <800řC. On heat treatment to 1000 and 1600řC the composites exhibit slag and glassy coatings. The porosity of composites impregnated with silica increased while of those impregnated with silicon oxycarbide decreased on heat treatment from 1000 to 1600řC. Oxidation behavior/inhibition of the composites was studied by TGA at 40-800řC. Silicon oxycarbide is better oxidation inhibitor than silica.
