The effects of the mechanical properties of the substrate on the effective hardness were studied for several different substrates and the existing theoretical models for substrate influence were tested. Well-defined nanocomposite NbN/C-N coatings deposited at the same time by r.f. reactive sputtering on several different substrates were used as testing material. The relevance of the empirical rules concerning the critical indentation depth, below which the substrate influence is negligible, is dicussed.
