A new steroidal alkaloid, 12-O-nicotinoylsarcostin, gagamine, was isolated from the roots of Cynanchum caudatum Max.(Asclepiadaceae), together with a known alkaloid, gagaminine. Their structures were established using spectroscopic methods.
