Generation of free radicals is often associated with the induction of apoptosis. Exposure of Jurkat cells to alpha-tocopheryl succinate (alpha-TOS), hydrogen peroxide (HP), anti-Fas IgM or TRAIL led to apoptosis. The reduced form of coenzyme Q suppressed cell death due to the chemical agents. However, coenzyme did not block apoptosis induced by anti-Fas IgM or TRAIL. Ubiquinol-10 inhibited ROS generation in cells exposed to alpha-TOS, and mitochondrially-targeted coenzyme Q analogue blocked apoptosis induced by alpha-TOS.
