Some of zinc(II) complex compounds with organic ligands are known to be biologically active. New zinc (II) salicylate complexes of the general formula Zn(Hsal)2 L2 4H2O (where Hsal = OHC6H4COO- , L = nicotinamide(nam), caffeine(caf)) were therefore prepared and characterized by means of IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Thermal behaviour of the newly synthetized compounds depend on the character of the attached organic ligand. Dehydration takes place between 80 - 120 C, followed by the release of organic ligands in the temperature range 170 - 280 and 280 - 320C. Subsequently, salicylic acid molecule is evolved while phenolic group is deprotonized. Thermal decomposition continues in the range 380 - 500C where CO2 and water are released and zinc oxide is formed as the final solid product of thermal decomposition of all studied complexes.
