Prokázalo se, že otěrové částice ultravysokomolekulárního polyethylenu (UHMWPE) vznikají třením obou částí totální kloubní náhrady. Některé z nich iniciují tvorbu zánětlivých mediátorů v okolí kosti, což vede k potlačení osteogeneze a k aktivaci osteoklastů, a následně k selhání implantátu. Byly vyhodnoceny výsledky implantací kloubních náhrad za pět posledních roků s ohledem na přítomnost PE granulomů. Byla vyvinuta metoda pro stanovení počtu a morfologie částic UHMWPE izolovaných z tkáně osteoagresivních granulomů.

It was proved that ultrahighmolecular weight (UHMWPE) wear particles are formed by mutual articulation of the parts in the total joint replacements (TJR). Some of these particles initiate formation of inflammation mediators in the surrounding bone which results in the inhibition of osteogenesis and activation of osteoclastic processes, and subsequently in failure of the implant.The results of joint arthroplasty performed in the last five years were evaluated in terms of presence of PE granulomas. A method for determination of morphology and number of UHMWPE particles isolated from the osteoaggresive granuloma tissue was developed.
