Several methods have been reported for the synthesis of dodecahydro-closo-dodecaborate(2-) anion derivatives containing organic side-chains suitable for further conjugation to targeting proteins for use in BNCT. Here we suggest to use boron cages as prosthetic groups for astatination of targeting proteins. The ŕ-emiting nuclide .sub.211 At is probably the best choice for targeted radiotherapy of single tumour cells and microscopic tumour cell clusters, when these are spread in large areas of the body. However, the weak astatine bond to proteins has hampered its use.
