A general statistical test of the stability of measurementconditions was demonstrated on the á-spectra of .sub.241 Pucumulated during four years. The ŕ- and ç-ray spectroscopyindicated stability of the .sub.241 Pu source. Monte Carlomodelling of individual collision events clarified the roleof electron scattering and energy losses within a radioactive source down to energies of several hundreds of eV. The impact ionization by á-particles of carbon and oxygen atomsin a surface contamination layer on the .sub.241 Pu and .sub.63 Ni sources was observed.
