Ethynylated aromatic Schiff bases R-C6H4-CH=N-C6H4-CđCH and R-C6H4-N=CH-C6H4-CđCH (R=Me, t-Bu, F, Br, CN, NO2, Me2N and -CđC-SiMe3) were polymerized using (i) [Rh(cod)OCH3]2, [(cod)=.eta. 4 -cyclooctadiene], (ii) Mo (=CHCPhMe2)(=N-C6H3-iPr2-2,6)[O-CMe(CF3)2]2, (iii) PdCl2 providing polyacetylenes with Schiff base type pendant groups. Depending on catalysts, molecular weight of polymers, the main chain cis double bond content and microstructure uniformity were found to decrease in the series Rh > Mo > Pd.
