Hydrotalcite-type compounds containing different amounts of Ni2+ and Mg2+ cations (molar ratio Ni2+: Mg2+: Al3+ in brucite-like layers varied as follows: 4 : 0 : 2; 1 : 3 : 2; 2 : 2 : 2) and Mg:Mn:Al hydrotalcite-like compounds with molar ratios 4:2:0, 4:1:1 were prepared by coprecipitation. The products were characterised by chemical analysis and XRD measurements. After calcination at different temperatures properties of the resulting materials (surface area, porous structure, surface concentration of metals by XPS) were examined. From the catalysts calcined at 800 °C Ni4Al2 showed the highest surface area and the highest catalytic activity. The oxidation activity in methane combustion (related to the surface area of mesopores) depended on the amount of surface concentration of nickel or Mn3+component linearly. The lower activity of manganese over nickel in methane combustion was proved.
