V souvislosti s proces evropské integrace jsou často vyslovovány obavy, že vstup země do EU ve svých důsledcích znamená postupnou ztrátu národní identity, nebo, že zejména lidé z nově přistupujících zemí nepociťují dostatečně silné ztotožnění se s Evropou a Evropskou unií. Nedostatek evropanství je spojován s nízkou úrovní tolerance vůči jiným etnikům a obsahuje potencionální rozpory a konflikty. Cílem konference byla diskuse o otázkách vztahujících se k problematice identity lidí žijících zejména v pohraničních regionech střední Evropy. Základem konference byly výsledky mezinárodního výzkumu biografické identity a mentality lidí žijících na česko-polsko-německé hranici v rámci euroregionu NISA. Předmětem diskuse byly i výsledky výzkumů realizovaných na jiných pracovištích. Byly rovněž presentovány další teoretické závěry a praktické zkušenosti z oblasti přeshraničního soužití.

In connection with the processes of European integration, concerns are often expressed that the entry to EU in its consequences entails a gradual loss of national identity or, that especially the people in the newly entering countries do not feel a sufficiently strong identification with Europe and the European Union. Lack of Europeanism is associated with insufficient tolerance in relation to other ethnic groups and implies potential contradictions and conflicts. The purpose of this conference is to discus the questions related to the issue of identity of the people living especially in the central Europe border regions. The basis of the conference was the results of the international research of biographical identity and mentality of the people living on the Czech-Polish-German borderline within the NISA Euroregion. The discuss also deal with the results of international researches realized at other workplaces. Part of the discussion was also the presentation of practical experience from the area of across-the-border coexistence.
