This book suggests a concise social psychological theory of democratic citizenship and of the dynamics of transition from communist totalitarianism to democracy. The theory is ilustrated by empirical data from four Central/Eastern European countries: Bulgaria, Belarus, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech case is used to ilustrate in depth the specific developmental changes that take place during the democratic transition.
