The geochemical analyses of metasedimentary units of the Krkonoše Mountains provided evidence about similar material composition and also ages of the Radčice and Poniklá Groups (Cambrian, Ordovician to Silurian-Devonian equivalents predominate). These rocks must be put together into one group only (proposed name - Vrchlabí Group, mostly Paleozoic). The Vrchlabí Group differs from the older Machnín Group (mostly Proterozoic), but also from the Paleozoic Velká Úpa Group. The Paleozoic series differs in many characteristics, but relatively low Th/Sc and Ce/Yb ratios are particularly significant in the Vrchlabí Group. The geochemistry of metasediments reflects the complex evolution of the West Sudetes, which started with Cambrian and Ordovician intracontinental rifting, subsequent sea-floor spreading and formation of large basins, to end with accumulation and bounded collision of segments of arcs and micro-plates.
