Chick mesonephric kidneys were examined histochemically to evaluate their structural and functional properties related to the disruption of absorption capacity of the proximal-tubular epithelium leading to cystical dilation of tubules. It is hypothetized that epithelial cells in some proximal tubules of nephrons posses a defective apical cell membrane causing reduced fluid absorption and subsequent overfilling and dilation of the tubules.
