Rats were maintained under artifical light-dark cycles with eitherlong 16-h photoperiod or a short 8-h photoperiod or under naturaldaylight in summer when the photoperiod lasted about 16-h or inwinter when it lasted only 8 hi. The rhythms of c-Fos immunoreacti-vity under natural photoperiod did not differ significantly fromthose under corresponding artifical photoperiods. The morning c-Fosrise in the dorsomedial SCN always preceded that in the ventrolateralSCN. The results show that wherease c-Fos rhythmicity under actuallight-dark cycles is affected by the photoperiod in both SCN subdivisions, mechanism of c-Fos induction in the dorsomedial SCN differs from thatin the ventrolateral SCN.
