The main issue of the scholastic method is the relation between reason and authority. Anselm of Canterbury had to deal with this problem too, he believed in reason and attributed a possible authority to it, but only insofar as it is rightly directed and does not contradict the only truth, e.g. truth of the Holy Scripture.
