The above characterizations of Hus which have arisen in consequence of his death in Constance, reveal the ambiguities in the interpretation of Hussite tradition from the 15thcentury to the prexent. The aim of the article is to show the different historical reasons for these interpretations and their evolution, Within the framework of the Roman Caatholic Church the labours of the recent Commision for the Study of the Problems Related to Personality, Life and Work of Jan Hus (sponsored by the Czech Bishops Conference) culminated in the International Symposium on Master Johannes Hus at the Papal Lateran University in Rome (December 1999). On this occasion Pope John Paul II. characterised Hus as the well known Czech preacher and one of the most famous masters of the University of Prague. He expressed a deep sorrow over the cruel death, to which Jan Hus had to submit and appreciated his role among the reformers of the Church.
