Comenius wurzelte tief in europäischer Kultur. Er ging selbstverständlich von den christlichen Traditionen aus (besonders vom Heiligen Schrift und vom Erbe der böhmischen Reformation). Für seinen eigensten Beitrag zur europäischen Kultur hielt man besonders sein pädagogisches Werk. Weniger bekannt sind die auf die Religionsreform gezielten Entwürfe, eine tolerante Form des Christentums darzustellen, welche die Konfessionsunterschiede überbrücken sollte.

Comenius was firmly anchored in European culture. He proceeded from Christian traditions and founders upon the Bibleand the heritage of Czech reformation. Comenius' contribution to European culture is found primarily inhis didactic works, the field in which he is considered as a founding personality. His proposals of religious reform, of a tolerant form of Christianity which would bridge over the differences of confession are less known.
