Obchod se ženami a dětmi a jeho rozšíření v oblasti Evropy bezprostředně souvisí s charakterem změn, které zde proběhly jak z hlediska prostupnosti hranic, tak i z hlediska ekonomických možností a je jednou ze stinných stránek pozitivního vývoje po pádu železné opony. Počet žen migrujících samostatně, bez rodin, i v České republice mírně stoupá.
